Prepare Your Home for the Hot Summer Months
Summer is just around the corner and with temperatures hitting above 40 degrees in Western Australia, it’s becoming even more essential to weather proof our homes in order to stay cool.
Don Harrison is a man with a plan for environmental sustainability that starts right at home.
The Murdoch University Adjunct Professor has won both the WA and National 2018 HIA GreenSmart Awards for his efforts in creating an environmentally- conscious home.
The Beaconsfield house features a low-maintenance, passive solar, universal access design with a 9.5 Star NatHERS energy rating as well as all LED lighting, low-energy DC ceiling fans, Low-E glass, cork floors and insulating internal shutters.
Don said everyone should at least have a think about the options available to them to make their homes more environmentally friendly.
“You can really insulate your house well and make it light and airy. Your home can be more comfortable and cost-effective than you may have been able to build previously.”
“It’s not necessarily more costly features, but it may be more desirable features. Just have a think about what you can put in your house to make it a more enjoyable house to live in.”
You can take a tour of Don’s place on Sustainable House Day – September 16th to get some inspiration for cheap and sustainable living options.
