Outdoor Blind Fabrics & Openness, Explained
Mesh openness, colour and clear PVC all change how an outdoor blind performs. A simple guide to choosing the right fabric for view, privacy, shade and airflow.
Two outdoor blinds can look identical and perform completely differently — because most of the magic is in the fabric. Openness, colour and whether you choose mesh or clear PVC all change how much you see, how private you feel and how much sun and heat you keep out. Here's what to know before you choose.
What “openness” means
Outdoor mesh is rated by its openness factor — roughly, how much of the weave is gaps versus fibre. A more open weave (say 5–10%) keeps more of your view and breeze while still cutting glare and UV; a tighter weave (1–3%) gives more shade, privacy and weather protection. There's no single “best” — it's a trade-off you set to suit the space.
View versus privacy
Here's the part that surprises people: darker fabrics usually preserve your view out better and cut glare, while lighter fabrics offer a touch more daytime privacy and reflect more heat. And remember privacy flips at night — once your inside lights are on, an open mesh becomes far easier to see through from outside.
Mesh or clear PVC?
Mesh screens shade, cut glare and let air move — ideal for taming the sun while keeping a breeze. Clear PVC does the opposite job: it fully blocks wind and rain while keeping the view wide open, which is why cafés and exposed balconies love it in winter. Plenty of homes use both, in different spots.
Fabric questions
Generally yes — an open weave keeps your view and breeze but offers less privacy, especially at night with lights on inside. A tighter weave trades some view for more privacy and shade.
External blinds block heat well either way, because they stop the sun before it reaches the glass. Lighter colours reflect a little more heat; darker colours preserve your view out and cut glare better.
