How to Choose Outdoor Blinds for Your Perth Home

Zip, straight-drop or café blinds? A simple, no-jargon guide to picking the right outdoor blind for your patio, alfresco or balcony — and getting it to last in WA conditions.

By Curtain World

Outdoor blinds turn a patio, balcony or alfresco into a space you'll actually use all year — cooler in summer, sheltered from wind and rain, and more private without losing the view. But “outdoor blinds” covers a few very different products, and the right choice depends on what you want the space to do. Here's how to decide.

Step 1

Start with the job it needs to do

Are you enclosing a space to entertain year-round, taking the edge off the afternoon sun, or screening the street for privacy? A fully-channelled zip blind seals a space against insects and weather; a straight-drop screen is a lighter, everyday sun-and-privacy solution; café blinds are the simple, budget-friendly option for balconies and venues. Knowing the job narrows the field fast.

  • Smart-home & remote ready
Step 3

Choosing your fabric

Outdoor mesh comes in different “openness” levels. A more open weave keeps your view and airflow while cutting glare and UV; a tighter weave gives more privacy, shade and weather protection.

Darker colours tend to preserve the view out, while lighter colours reflect more heat. We'll bring samples so you can see the difference in your own light before you decide.

Step 4

Manual or motorised?

Manual crank or spring operation is reliable and cost-effective for smaller blinds. For wide spans, high openings, or several blinds you'll use every day, motorisation is worth it — add a remote, or connect to your smart home for scheduling and one-tap control.

Outdoor blind questions

Mesh screens are water-resistant and greatly reduce wind-driven rain, but they aren't fully waterproof. For a sealed, dry space, ask us about clear PVC or a fully-channelled zip system.

Channel-guided (zip) systems are the strongest option and handle gusty, coastal sites well. We'll always recommend raising blinds in extreme wind, and we'll cover the limits for your setup at the measure.

Yes — most of our outdoor blinds can be motorised, with remote and smart-home control. It's especially worth it for wide or high openings you use every day.

It depends on size, mesh, and manual versus motorised. The quickest way to a real number is a free in-home measure and quote.
