How to care for your curtains so they last 10+ years

Custom curtains aren't cheap — but treat them right and they'll outlast three rounds of off-the-shelf alternatives. Here's the no-nonsense care guide.

By Curtain World Team

We back every curtain with a 10-year warranty, but with a bit of care most of our customers see their curtains looking great well past that. Here's the maintenance routine we recommend.

Vacuum monthly

Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum and run it gently across the fabric in vertical strokes. This removes dust before it has a chance to embed itself into the weave — by far the biggest cause of "tired-looking" curtains.

Spills happen

Spot clean spills immediately

Blot, never rub. Use a clean white cloth and lukewarm water. For tougher stains, a tiny amount of mild detergent on the cloth works for most fabrics. Always test on a hidden hem first.

Professional clean every 2–3 years

We recommend professional dry-cleaning (or a specialist on-site curtain cleaner) every two to three years. Avoid the temptation to throw lined curtains in the washing machine — the lining and main fabric shrink at different rates and the result is permanent puckering.

Keep them open during the hottest part of the day

UV is the silent killer of curtain fabric. If you have west-facing rooms with very strong afternoon sun, consider adding sheer curtains as a UV buffer — they protect both the curtains AND your furniture behind them.

If anything ever goes wrong with the manufacturing or hardware, give us a call — that's what the warranty is for. We service every install we do.
