Zip Screens vs Café Blinds vs Straight-Drop: Which Should You Choose?

Three popular outdoor blinds, three very different jobs. A quick decision guide to the right one for your patio, balcony or café.

By Curtain World

If you've started shopping for outdoor blinds, you've probably hit three names again and again: zip (channel-guided) blinds, café blinds and straight-drop blinds. From the street they can look similar, but they solve very different problems — and choosing the wrong one is an expensive lesson. Here's how to land on the right one quickly.

Choose zip if…

You want a fully enclosed room

Zip blinds lock the fabric into a channel down each side, so the screen stays taut and completely enclosed. That seal is what keeps out insects, wind-driven rain and glare — turning a patio into a genuine all-weather room. If you want to use the space through winter, or you're in an exposed or coastal spot, this is the one.

Choose café if…

Budget and simplicity come first

Café blinds are the simplest, most affordable option. They roll straight up and down by hand, and clear-PVC versions keep your view while blocking the weather — which is why you see them on so many balconies, verandahs and hospitality venues. Not fully sealed, but hard to beat on value.

Choose straight-drop if…

It's mostly about sun and privacy

Straight-drop blinds hang over an opening without side channels — a clean, everyday screen for cutting glare and adding privacy. Choose a more open mesh to keep the view and breeze, or a tighter weave for more shade and seclusion. Lighter and simpler than a zip system, and ideal where full enclosure isn't the goal.

Common questions

Café blinds are generally the most budget-friendly, then straight-drop, with channel-guided zip systems at the premium end. Size and motorisation change the picture, so a quick measure gives the real number.

Absolutely — many homes use a fully-sealed zip blind on the main alfresco and simpler straight-drop or café blinds elsewhere. We'll help you match each opening to the right product.
