An Outdoor Christmas – How to Stay Cool This Summer

In the hot Australian summer, it’s easy to forget to weatherproof our homes and outdoor entertaining areas. This article gives you some handy hints to beat the heat and take care of your home.

Australia is renowned for its summer heat and the typical Aussie Christmas is only a few sleeps away. Whilst most of us are busy preparing Christmas gifts, polishing off those BBQ’s and getting through the last few weeks of work, it’s easy to forget about weather proofing the outdoor area in time for the silly season.

Taking advantage of the Australian summer is great, but even for the sun lover the 40+ degree heat can get too much come late December. That’s no reason to hide indoors for the season and perch under the air conditioning unit though; we have a few ideas to keep you and your outdoor area cool and sheltered, and make your home the perfect entertaining spot this summer.

Bring Your Home Outside

There’s nothing quite like entertaining, whether it’s just for you and your family or for guests. Now is the perfect time to start taking advantage of summer and bringing your kitchen and living area outside to enjoy it. If your budget doesn’t permit a built-in kitchen equipped with all the whizz-bang features, you can work around it by sprucing up the deck or alfresco area with comfy chairs, a decent BBQ and a bar fridge. Investing in a quality BBQ that allows you to chargrill, roast and bake will make cooking and entertaining much more convenient, and a good table and chairs will ensure you and your guests are relaxed.

Stay Sun-Safe with Some Much Needed Shade

To protect the chef and the whole family during those wonderful Christmas cook-outs, consider investing in an awning or outdoor blinds this summer to keep the sizzling sun in check. These shady blinds for your outdoor entertainment area are made from high-density canvas or polyester mesh, providing shade and reducing the sun’s harmful UV rays. It’s also possible to install two-tone outdoor blinds and awnings made from both canvas and PVC, making them sun, wind and rain proof for sheltered outdoor living year-round.

It’s also ideal to set up some outdoor misting fans to keep everyone feeling cool and refreshed.

Have Fun with Water

Water is undoubtedly one of the best ways to keep cool in summer – drinking it and playing in it. Most of us never seem to drink enough of it during the festive season and trying to get the kids to stay hydrated is even harder. Buying your kids a fun and creative drink bottle can encourage them to drink more, or having lots of fresh fruit available like watermelon can be super refreshing for everyone.

If space permits, consider buying a blow up pool to splash in outside. It doesn’t have to be huge, but something to sit in, even waist deep, can be just enough to take the bite out of the heat. If you have a baby or toddler, Sea ‘n Sand shell pools can be a perfect idea. Fill one side with water and the other with sand so your young one can keep cool and play. These are also great if you have a dog too and help to keep them from overheating.

Keep Your Garden Hydrated

Anyone who’s experienced the Aussie summer is well aware how hard it is to keep your garden looking green and fresh, especially with the water restrictions in place. Now’s a good time to evaluate your water use scenario and the types of plants you have. Where possible, planting your greenery in small pots or moveable boxes will mean you can move them out of the direct sun to the more shaded areas.

If you have a large lawn area, it’s best to mow much higher to give your lawn a better chance at shading itself. Stay away from using chemical pellet fertilisers as the heat can cause them to chemically burn the grass – use weak liquid based solutions instead.

Watering your garden in the morning and evening can help to cool your outdoor area too. Whilst you’re looking after the shrubbery, hosing the house down in the process can add a refreshing feel to both the inside and outside too.
