What is Your Colour Personality?

Colour is the most powerful tool when it comes to interior decorating and can make a space come alive. A different wall colour will change the atmosphere of a space instantly. Colour impacts on our health, emotions, and wellbeing.

Therefore, it is helpful to know about colour theory and psychology when starting a renovation project or redecorating your home. Even, if you only want to buy new curtains, it is helpful to know which colours suit your personality.

As curtain specialists, we recommend finding out first what mood you would like to achieve in your home and, secondly, what seasonal colour personality you are.

Start with an assessment of your home or room and define what mood you would like to create. Answer the question: What would I like my home to do for me? How should my home make me feel? The words you come up with, for example, could be energetic, relaxing, exuberant, simple, opulent, breezy, quirky, open, welcoming, etc. Try and drill down your list to the three most important keywords that describe your feelings.

In colour psychology, there are four seasons reflecting nature’s pattern: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter; each of these seasons is defined by specific characteristics, such as key attributes, colours, patterns, and textures.

Once you have identified your keywords you can work out what colour personality you are. Your colour personality will then give you an indication about the paint colours, the textures, and patterns you should use in your home. You will be able to create a colour scheme that turns your home into a place that reflects and supports your colour personality. And your interior will effortlessly come together. Even if your family members represent different colour personalities, choosing the right colours can reduce stress and create harmony.

Let’s look at an example. The palette that CurtainWorld Perth has chosen for autumn 2016 incorporates many delicate, light and muted tones, such as Pantone Silver Grey, Rose Quartz, Lint, and Orchid Haze combined with darker, greyed-off hues, such as Fig, Thyme or Volcanic Glass, a rich charcoal.

Autumn Pantone Colours

If you feel attracted by this palette you are an autumn personality. Autumn personalities are often born organisers, pay attention to detail and love creating order out of chaos; they have a strong aesthetic sense and therefore appreciate great design, craftsmanship, and quality; they are logical, efficient, intuitive, elegant, and have a strong sense of responsibility. They are extremely sensitive to the feelings of others.

Autumn colours are cool and calm, delicate, and faded with a touch of grey. Patterns are flowing, delicate lines and floral. Textures should be of high quality, such as linen, silk, chiffon, cashmere or lace.

If you are looking for window coverings, for example, you will most probably like soft, elegant sheers with delicate patterns from the CurtainWorld Edra collection or in linen look, such as the Rossini collection. For block-out curtains you might want to choose a design from the Florence Broadhurst collection: Japanese Floral, Fingers, Kabuki or Egrets feature autumn personality patterns. The Luciano Garden range transforms your home in a breezy autumn garden. The Coco range also incorporates the soft and delicate autumn colours.

Rossini Linen Sheer

Imagine how easy it would become to choose the right colours and textures for your home once you know what personalities you and your family are. And, don’t worry, if you have more than one personality type living under your roof, which is often the case. Your home is unique to you and should reflect your personalities. How do you go about this? Looking at your room assessment and the words you have identified, you will most likely discover that there is one dominant season and another one that is subordinate. By mixing seasonal characteristics you can create your unique interior. The important thing, however, is that you stick to the colours from your main season. You can then add some textures or patterns from one of the other seasons.

For example, as an autumn personality you would use the muted autumn colours as your main colours but could add a touch of warm timber by using a timber venetian blind for a finished look on your windows.

Never mix the colours from different seasons, as you will end up with a colour scheme that triggers more headaches than wellbeing at home.
