Ten Ways to Keep your Home Cooler this Summer

Summer is here and the days are getting hotter and it is only going to keep heating up. Whilst we welcome the warmer weather again, when we get home from a long hot day – or head to bed in the evening – we want to be able to cool down.

AC units are obviously the perfect tool for keeping your home cool in the summer months, however not everyone has the budget to cover the running costs or even the installation of an entire system. For those of you who want to keep cool without an AC unit this article will give you all the ideas you need.

Close your Curtains

Did you know that 30% of the unwanted heat in your home comes in through your windows? Investing in a good pair of block out blinds for your sun facing windows and sheers, or shades for the rest, can help your home to feel 20 degrees cooler and save you up to 10% on your cooling bills.

Buy new Sheets

It is time to put away your fleece blankets and duvets (or “doonas”) and swap them for cotton sheets. Cotton is a much lighter fabric, meaning it breathes a lot easier, keeping you cooler – fold your sheets and put them in the freezer a couple of hours before you go to bed, put them on at the last minute and then when you get in it will be cool and fresh rather than hot and stuffy.

Close your Doors

Close the door to all of the rooms in your home that are vacant during the day. This will prevent cool air from cooling areas that don’t need to be cooled during the day.

Focus on You

Rather than trying all the tips and tricks in the book to keep your home cool, focus on just keeping yourself comfortable. Stock up your freezer with homemade iced drinks and treats and store towels and cloths in the freezer to be applied to your neck or back when the heat gets to be a little too much.

Change the Settings on your Fan

If you have a ceiling fan it should be set to turn clockwise during the cooler months to blow the air up and counter clockwise during the summer to force the air down. The change in rotation will result in a higher turning speed and create a chilled wind effect, helping you to feel cooler and more comfortable.

Turn on your Extractor Fans

Most modern bathrooms and kitchens are fitted with extractor fans which are used to take the hot hair produced from cooking or showering out of your home to keep it cool. If you are in the house during the day switching your extractor fans on can make a huge difference to the temperature of your home – be sure not to combine them with your AC though, you don’t want to be paying to cool the garden too!

Open Everything at Night

Luckily, in most places in and around Perth the temperature drops at night, especially when there is no cloud cover. One of the easiest ways to cool your home down every night, ready for the next day, is to open the windows and doors and allow the cooler air to filter in. Use fans to guide the cooler air through the home into harder to reach areas. Opening all of your blinds and curtains will maximise this effect – however, it’s best to leave them closed on the weekends when you don’t want to be woken by the early rising sun.Stop Cooking, Start Grilling

Cooking in your home produces masses of heat that remains contained in the ground floor rooms of your home, making the entire area feel stuffy and hot. Whilst extractor fans and opening the windows may help, it can be impossible to cool down the home whilst food is being cooked. This summer make the most of your garden or patio and start grilling everything that you can. It’s a treat for the whole family and you’ll keep your home comfy.

Swap your Bulbs

Incandescent bulbs waste 90% of their energy in excess heat which is then emitted into your home. Making a switch to CFL’s or LED’s can make a huge difference to both the overall temperature of your home and the cost of your electricity bill at the end of the month.

Invest in Making your Home Ready for Summer

Whilst AC can seem like an extravagant solution to your cooling problems, there are many other improvements you can make within your home that shouldn’t cost as much, will last a lot longer and be just as effective.

Choose outdoor blinds or shutters to protect your home from the outside, in. Outdoor blinds and awnings can also be used to keep your veranda, patio or decking cool as well. Planting large trees and vines around your sun facing windows can also help to shade and filter the light that is allowed into your home.
